about the course

How to run an Engineering organization in the language of metrics

Engineering and the business side often speak different languages. Teams operate in terms of technical debt, quality, architecture, and delivery, while stakeholders care far more about speed, predictability, and business outcomes.

Mentor: Ihor Drozd, CTO at Silpo.

This crash course is about moving from feelings to facts: using engineering metrics to see the real state of your teams, find bottlenecks and efficiency losses, make the case for changing priorities, and explain technical problems in terms of business impact.

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • assess the state of your engineering teams more objectively
  • understand which metrics are actually useful for decision-making
  • find bottlenecks and resource losses
  • see the connection between speed, quality, reliability, and business outcomes
  • determine which problems are worth solving first
  • explain technical problems in terms of risk and business impact
  • use data to make the case for priorities
format
Duration3 sessions of 2 hours each, 6 hours total
FormatHands-on approaches, real cases from engineering organizations, working with data, breaking down management situations
Hands-onAn exercise to calculate key metrics for your own team
Course languageUkrainian
audience
  • CTO, CIO, VP / Head of Engineering
  • Engineering Managers, Tech Leads, Architects
  • Delivery Managers, QA Leads, Product Managers who work with engineering teams
  • Especially useful for leaders responsible for several teams, who can't rely on personal conversations, status updates, and subjective impressions alone to gauge engineering health
program

Three sessions: from SDLC to the language of business

NameTopicSession
session-1 SDLC and metrics: what to actually measure 1/3 ›
  • – A typical end-to-end SDLC: where bottlenecks, lack of visibility, time loss, and delivery risk usually show up
  • – Which metrics are genuinely worth watching at different stages of development, and which just create a false sense of control
  • – Organizing engineering metrics by category — Code, Process, QA, Delivery, Operational, Security — what they show and how to read them
session-2 From signals to systemic problems 2/3 ›
  • – Working with a set of signals instead of a single number — finding systemic problems instead of treating symptoms one by one
  • – The logic chain: engineering signal → problem → root cause → business impact → decision
  • – How to tell a team's local problem apart from a systemic problem in process, architecture, or the organization
session-3 The language of business: priorities and practice 3/3 ›
  • – Translating technical metrics into business language: risk, time-to-market, cost, revenue, EBITDA, NPS
  • – Making the case for changing priorities, and discussing technical debt, quality, reliability, and engineering improvements with stakeholders
  • – Hands-on: calculating key metrics for your own teams and applying the approach to your organization
